No Universality for Electron’s Power-Law Index (p) in Gamma-Ray Bursts and Other Relativistic Sources

چکیده
The Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) prompt emission is believed to be from highly relativistic electrons accelerated in relativistic shocks. From the GRB high-energy power-law spectral indices β observed by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) Large Area Detectors (LAD), we determine the spectral index, p, of the electrons’ energy distribution. Both the theoretical calculations and numerical simulations of the particle acceleration in relativistic shocks show that p has a universal value ≈ 2.2 − 2.3. We show that the observed distribution of p during GRBs is not consistent with a δ-function distribution or an universal p value, with the width of the distribution ≥ 0.55. The distributions of p during X-ray afterglows are also investigated. But a “universality” of p in X-ray afterglows cannot be ruled out because of the limited sample size. The p distributions in blazars and pulsar wind nebulae are also broad, inconsistent with a δ-function distribution.

Electron Acceleration and Efficiency in Nonthermal Gamma Ray Sources
In energetic nonthermal sources such as gamma-ray bursts, AGN or galactic jet sources, etc., one expects both relativistic and transrelativistic shocks acompanied by violent motions of moderately relativistic plasma. We present general considerations indicating that these sites are electron and positron accelerators leading to a modified power law spectrum. The electron (or e) energy index is v...
متن کاملNew Relativistic Particle-In-Cell Simulation Studies of Prompt and Early Afterglows from GRBs
Nonthermal radiation observed from astrophysical systems containing relativistic jets and shocks, e.g., gammaray bursts (GRBs), active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and microquasars commonly exhibit power-law emission spectra. Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-ion (or electron-positron) jets injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs within the downstream j...
متن کاملConstraints on Jets and Luminosity Function of Gamma-ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae
If Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are generally associated with supernovae like 1998bw, a relatively wide intrinsic luminosity function is implied, which indicates the existence of a large amount of undetected dim bursts, and a much higher event-rate than is often assumed. If it is assumed that the intrinsic luminosity function of GRBs is a power-law: φ(L) ∝ L (β > 0, Lmin ≤ L ≤ Lmax), data from the B...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts: afterglows from cylindrical jets
Nearly all previous discussion on beaming effects in gamma-ray bursts have assumed a conical geometry. However, more and more observations on relativistic jets in radio galaxies, active galactic nuclei, and “microquasars” in the Galaxy have shown that many of these outflows are not conical, but cylindrical, i.e., they maintain constant cross sections at large scales. Thus it is necessary to dis...
متن کاملOn the Power Spectrum Density of Gamma Ray Bursts
Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) are known to have short-time variability and power-law behavior with the index −1.67 in the power spectrum density. Reanalyzing the expanded data, we have found a) the power-law comes from the global profile of the burst and not from the self-similar shots nor rapid fluctuations in the luminosity profile. b) The power indices vary from burst to burst and the value −1.67 ...
